The evolution of British general practice, 1850–1948

چکیده
my ideal historical compendium, the Dictionary of National Biography, authors are given a clear pattern, which has to be followed, and the subsequent editorial process is unusually meticulous. The result is far from bland uniformity (as see the accounts), but a backdrop of facts in their accustomed place together with individuality where it is appropriate, in the section evaluating a person's contribution. There is no reason why such a model could not be applied widely to other genres of books (though, admittedly, the DNB has a considerable financial subsidy and a generous staffing of experts). Whatever the future of compendiums (which clearly has to involve the Web), in recommendations for the present publication I have to fall back on the old cliche: this History is too flawed for the individual to purchase, but parts of it are too noteworthy not to be on the shelves of every library. I wish, though, that the editors had sat down for a couple of months and distilled all the facts in this book into a compulsively readable account of 200 pages. They would have needed to add material quite often, but the result, which they are clearly capable of, would have been a masterpiece.

Community general practitioners.
Commemorating a giant figure whose memory is still fresh to many is a heavy responsibility. Pat Byrne was a plebeian and rejoiced in the plebs' victory represented by the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948. In 30 years of practice in Milnethorpe, a market town and former seaport of Westmoreland, Pat developed the ideal of personal, continuing primary care of the highest clinica...
متن کاملO ct 2 00 4 Eclipsing Binaries in the Young LMC Cluster NGC 1850 Stuart
I present light curves for two detached eclipsing binary stars in the region of the LMC cluster NGC 1850, which is possibly a young globular cluster still in formation. One, a likely O-type star, is a newly detected eclipsing binary in the region of the very young subcluster NGC 1850A. This binary is among a small number of highly massive O-type stars in binary systems found in LMC clusters. Th...

متن کاملRupture of the inter-ventricular septum.
Rupture of the infarcted interventricular septum was first described more than a century ago in this country (Latham, 1846). The subject was last reviewed by Fowler and Failey (1948), who discovered 56 recorded cases, of which 16 were diagnosed during life. Since their review, single cases have been described by Sweeny (1948), Bickerman and Irons (1949), Shapir (1949), Ungar and Ullman (1950), ...
